MGM/UA Communications Co.: The film company reported a first-quarter loss of $2.02 million, an improvement over the $39.47-million loss in the same period last year. The Culver City-based company said its home video division contributed to a 24% increase in operating revenue, which totaled $211.5 million. Operating income totaled $17.03 million, in contrast with last year’s loss of $14.33 million. The company attributed the losses to a lack of new feature films. Production had all but halted in the past two years as the company searched for a buyer.
