RUIDOSO DOWNS, N.M. — Trainer Jack Brooks scored a rare sweep of the top four places in Sunday’s $246,600 Kansas Derby for quarter horses as his 3-year-old colt Special Project led the way.
Following Special Project across the finish line of the 400-yard sprint were Sweet N Special, Rockin Alene and Strawberry Silk, who last September gave Brooks an unprecedented fifth victory in the All American Futurity, the world’s richest quarter-horse race.
Special Project covered the distance in a Kansas Derby record time of 19.43.
The four horses were all trained by Brooks, who over the last decade has established himself as the top quarter-horse trainer in the country.
Special Project earned $101,329.54 for owners Lindsey Burbank and John Douglas of Leesburg, Fla.
The total payoff for the four Brooks-trained horses was $183,840.54.
