ETIENNE EMANUEL
School: Nordhoff
Sport: Basketball
Year: Junior
Season at a glance: The 6-foot-3 point guard is averaging 12.8 points and 5.9 assists for the surprising Rangers, who tied Santa Clara for the Frontier League title. Emanuel, a standout defensive back in football, has started at point guard since his freshman season and, because of his height, presents matchup problems.
Week at a glance: Emanuel scored several game-turning baskets in Nordhoff’s 62-56 double-overtime victory over Northview in the first round of the Southern Section Division III-A playoffs. Emanuel, who scored 16 points, tipped in a teammate’s miss at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime and made a five-foot jump shot to force a second overtime. Emanuel had a three-pointer and an assist in the second overtime.

REBECCA HIDALGO
School: Crescenta Valley
Sport: Soccer
Year: Junior
Season at a glance: Hidalgo is tied with midfielder Julie Herrold for the team lead in goals with 23. The tandem has helped the Pacific League runner-up advance to a Southern Section Division I second-round game today against Claremont. “Rebecca has great speed and she gets more breakaways than anyone I’ve coached because Julie sets the table for her so well,” said Coach Bud Dain.
Week at a glance: Hidalgo scored twice in the Falcons’ 6-0 wild-card victory over Channel Islands and scored both goals in a first-round, 2-1 victory at Santa Monica. The winning goal came in overtime off Herrold’s second assist of the game.
