At least seven people were killed and six injured in Indian-controlled Kashmir when police opened fire on stone-throwing demonstrators, a police official said. Thousands of protesters were demanding the exhumation of the bodies of five men shot last week in what officials said was a gun battle with the militants blamed for the March 20 massacre of 35 Sikhs, the official said. Residents of Anantnag say the five were innocent youths who had disappeared from their homes. Civil authorities imposed an indefinite curfew in Anantnag district, the scene of the clash. Rights group Amnesty International called on India to carry out a full inquiry.
