Iraqi Child Death Rates Up Since Gulf War, Study Says

LONDON — Childhood mortality in much of Iraq has doubled since the 1991 Persian Gulf War and the introduction of U.N. sanctions, according to research released today. Surveys showed death rates increasing in southern and central Iraq. The study published in the Lancet journal cited deteriorating health care, malnutrition, water and power shortages, and an increase in communicable diseases.
