Animal Services Goes to the Dogs to Count Pets

The county Animal Services Department is going door-to-door to count animals.
The census is designed to ensure that dogs are licensed and to gauge what type of animal companions people have and how many.
“We’re trying to get some sense of the animal population and what we can expect in the future,” General Manager Mike McFarland said, adding that it would help on decisions for programs in the county.
Owners who choose to license their dogs during the census will not be charged the citation fee for having an unlicensed canine. McFarland estimates only 15% to 20% of the pet dogs in the county are licensed.
